Duran Duran Concert

I went to the Duran Duran: Future Past concert tonight in Salt Lake City. I had SO! MUCH! FUN!!

I heard about it on the radio a couple months ago and just knew I had to go. Duran Duran is one of the bands of my childhood. This is a silly memory but my cousin always wanted to play house and I didn’t really care for baby dolls so I always told her that we could play house as long as we were married to members of Duran Duran. Ha ha ha. I still have their greatest hits CD and guess what’s going to be playing for days to come. 

Anyway, I heard about it and checked with my concert loving friend and she couldn’t make that date so I checked with my theater loving friend and she said yes. We have a season pass to the theater but both of us have decided we need to watch for fun concerts now as well. 

The opening acts were Bastille and Nile Rogers and Chic. We got there and found our seats in time to hear like the last Bastille song and the only one I knew. I truly have no idea who Nile Rogers and Chic are and didn’t recognize their music, except that Nile Rogers wrote a ton of songs that I do know and they sang a bunch of different stuff so it was pretty fun. 

Then it was finally time for Duran Duran a little after 9 pm. They started with Wild Boys and ended the encore with Rio. In between they played all my favorites with about 4 songs I didn’t really know. It was fantastic. Simon can still sing and John Taylor is still on the guitar. Nick Rhodes still on the keyboard. Roger Taylor was on drums. 

It was a seriously good time.

Blue Skies and Sunshine

Spent a great day with 2 of my nieces. We went to SL to see the Utah Symphony and Ballet West II perform Peter and the Wolf.  The girls said they liked it. I know I did. I think they did a fanstastic job.   But then, I’ve loved the music for years. Having the dancers dressed up like the characters during the narration was so much fun though.

Then a little lunch and shopping over at City Creek. Sitting by the fountains in the sunshine was just perfect. It’s a little cool but it felt like spring.

An Un-Anniversary of Sorts

A friend and I went to see the Dixie Chicks in concert last Friday night. It was fun. They did a lot of my favorite songs. I love their music. The concert was at the Usana Amphitheater. I had never been there before. I liked the outdoor setting. We had seats, but the lawn seating was pretty far back. The tickets would have had to be really cheap for me to want to sit back there.  And it’s a pain in the butt to get in and out of. On the way back home we stopped at a gas station for a drink and then turned up the music and sang at the top of our lungs, partly to keep us awake and partly because it was fun.

As I was driving to work this morning the announcer on the radio said the date and it seemed really familiar to me for some reason. Then I realized that I got married 20 years ago today. I was divorced 5 years later, but this was the big day. Looking back I can’t believe how different my life has been from what I had planned. Not different in a bad way, because I am generally happy.  It’s just I was young and back then I thought that I had to get married and have kids and a house and all that stuff. 

There are only a few things in my life that I truly regret, so I don’t think getting married was one of them, but I can’t say it was a good thing. It’s hard to remember anything happy about those five years of my life even though there must have been some good times. Maybe I should say I rarely have reasons to remember those times (good or bad) because they have nothing to do with my life today, except for maybe being a kind of crossroads to the path I did go down.  Regardless, I am happy with where I did end up and have been blessed in so many ways.

Pink Martini

I finally got to see Pink Martini (www.pinkmartini.com) in concert last night. It was awesome!!! They played at Red Butte Gardens in SLC. It was a perfect venue and a perfect night. The weather was warm while we were waiting in line before the gates opened but once we got seated, there was a little breeze and when the sun went down, it was nice and cool. Once we found a place to sit, we unpacked our dinner and my sister made us non-alcoholic pink martini's to drink. Outdoor concerts are a lot of fun.

I don't know how long I've loved Pink Martini's music. I think my sister introduced me to them and I have 5 of their cd's. I definitely have my favorite songs, but they have so many good ones. It's just feel-good stuff and I can't help but sing along or move to the beat when they sing in a language I don't understand.

It was a great night and I will look forward to next time they come to SLC. Once is just not enough.
